OECD 438 - Isolated Chicken Eye Test

Dear customer,

our laboratories have over 4 years experience with the OECD 438 / Isolated Chicken Eye test and not much less with the histopathology part. We would like to take care also for your in vitro tests and be your competent partner.

Important information:

At the moment, no eye in vitro test exists where we can formulation classified as Eye Cat. 1 – (it results from calculation methods) to confirm in classification the formulation as Eye Cat.2.

It is also not accepted to perform for formulations an in vivo OECD 405 for eye irritation.

You can take away the H318 if according to the ICE-Test are really no effects, and the previous classification was made on the basis of the result of a calculation method. If the previous classification was made using the result of an in vivo test, it can not be overruled by an in-vitro result. But you can not take away the H319, because the ICE test method can be used to identify chemicals inducing serious eye damage only, i.e., chemicals to be classified as UN GHS Category 1. The ICE test method is not recommended for the identification of test chemicals that should be classified as irritating to eyes (i.e., UN GHS Category 2 or Category 2A) or test chemicals that should be classified as mildly irritating to eyes (UN GHS Category 2B).

However we recommend our customers to perform an OECD 438 and if there are really no effects than you can take away the classification H318.

Information regarding histopathology part for the OECD 438 / Isolated Chicken Eye Test:

As for the histopathology, if the results clearly show, that the examined test item is corrosive or strong irritant, histopathology is not necessary. If one of the three observed parameters (cornea thickness, cornea opacity and fluorescein retention) can show the maximum ICE Class (IV) or two and/or all the observed parameter are close to maximum (2xIII 1xIV, 3xIII), the histopathology is not necessary, but it is recommended. Finally, the histopathology can confirm the results and/or help if the results or one of the parameters is not univocal.

Histopathology is an optional part of this test and is performed based on the result or on request.

Do you need a quotation ?

1) If you need a quotation for OECD 438 or other in vitro tests such as OECD 431 / 435 / 437 / 439 or others, please send us an email to

and tell us which test, what kind of substance and how many substances you want to test in parallel.

The cost for each additional test substance if can be tested in parallel is much lower than the cost for the first test substance.

Afterwards you will receive our quotation within 24 hours.

2) If you agree with our quotation, please send back the confirmation by email.

3) The project will then be initiated within 24 hours and you will receive by email further information about the complete project procedure.

We like to take our customers by the hand and inform them step by step.

Regarding your urgency, we can easily provisionally book for 2 weeks in the laboratory testing capacity for you.

In case of any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by email or phone.

We like to answer your questions.
